PCOS

What is PCOS?

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal disorder that affects women of reproductive age. It is characterized by irregular menstrual cycles, excessive androgen (male hormone) levels, and the presence of small cysts on the ovaries. PCOS can lead to fertility issues, weight gain, and other health complications if left untreated.

How does PCOS occur?

PCOS occurs when a woman’s ovaries produce excessive amounts of androgens, leading to hormonal imbalances. This can interfere with the regular development and release of eggs, causing irregular or absent periods and the formation of small, fluid-filled sacs (cysts) in the ovaries.

Causes of PCOS:

  • Insulin Resistance: Many women with PCOS have insulin resistance, which causes the body to produce more insulin. This excess insulin can stimulate the ovaries to produce more androgens, contributing to the condition.

  • Hormonal Imbalance: PCOS is often linked to elevated levels of androgens (male hormones) that disrupt normal ovulation.

  • Genetics: PCOS tends to run in families, suggesting a genetic component.

  • Inflammation: Low-grade inflammation may stimulate the ovaries to produce excess androgens, worsening PCOS symptoms.

Symptoms:

  • Irregular or missed periods
  • Excessive hair growth on the face, chest, and back (hirsutism)
  • Acne and oily skin
  • Weight gain, especially around the abdomen
  • Thinning hair or hair loss
  • Difficulty getting pregnant (infertility)
